An unvented attic on a July afternoon can pass 130°F. That heat doesn't just stay inside; it cooks the shingles from underneath, drying out the asphalt years ahead of schedule. How real ventilation works
- Soffit vents (intake, at the eaves) let cool air in low
- Ridge vent (exhaust, at the peak) lets hot air out high
- The two work as a pair — blocked soffits choke a ridge vent into decoration. Insulation stuffed into the eaves is the most common silent killer.
Ventilation is also a warranty issue: major shingle manufacturers can reduce coverage on roofs installed over inadequately vented attics. When evaluating any roof — including your current one — the attic is where the honest answers are.

Signs: a scorching attic in summer, rusty nail tips or frost inside during winter, ice dams at the eaves, and shingles aging fastest on sun-facing slopes.
Passive ridge-and-soffit systems handled correctly usually outperform them for longevity and cost. Powered fans can even pull conditioned air out of the house when the attic floor leaks air.
Mixing exhaust types (ridge vent plus box vents, for example) can short-circuit airflow. Ventilation should be designed as one system, not accumulated as gadgets.
